Botanical name: Ocimum basilicum Habitat: India, central Asia

Plant parts used: leaves and flowering tops Active ingredients and nutrients: essential oils (ocimene, linalool, estragol, eugenol, cineole), tannins, quercetin glycosides

Therapeutic properties: aromatic plant whose studies have shown that it can improve situations of anxiety and depression and reduce both physical and emotional stress. The exact mechanism of action has yet to be determined, although research has shown that basil decreases the amount of cortisol released during stress without the negative side effects of prescription drugs.
It has also been shown that the phenolic components present in the plant have a protective and antioxidant effect on the brain cells, thus reducing the imbalances of the neurotransmitters, induced by stress, which cause mood swings and depression.
